Terrarium

Terrarium

A terrarium is a type of container garden that is made up of plants and soil. It can be either open or closed. Terrarium Singapore is becoming increasingly popular, and there are many different types to choose from! In this blog post, we will discuss 14 popular types of terrariums and instructions on how to recognise each one. So whether you are a beginner or an expert, you can still learn more about different types of terrarium and get ready to create your own version using terrarium diy kit Singapore!

Aquaterrarium

Aquaterrarium is a hermaphroditic environment that combines both aquatic and terrestrial features. Aquaterrariums gained popularity when some biologists or collectors built them to house turtles and crocodiles that may live on land as well as in water. Aquaterrarium is divided into three types based on the ratio of water and substance: Paludarium, Riparium, Rivarium.

Paludarium

It's also known as a semi-terrestrial lake. The name is derived from the Latin word palus, which means "swarm." It is a region with little water and a variety of semi-terrestrial plants. This may include amphibians and insects.

Riparium

The word riparium comes from the Latin term ripa, which means "riverbank." A riparium is a river bank replica. It is defined by a high percentage of water (usually over 50%) as well as dense vegetation or trees.

Rivarium

Rivarium is a term used to describe the typically smooth and flowing appearance of water. It may also be translated as "riverine." The Latin rivus refers to both a river or stream. The main setting of Rivarium is based on a river and stream section with numerous boulders and a minimal water level (less than 50%). Typical crops include semi-terrestrial, terrestrial, and aquatic plants. Rivarium may include aquatic animals as well.

Rainforest Terrarium

Simulate the tropical rainforest's plant and animal life. It is a closed environment that requires high humidity and should be ventilated to prevent mold or mildew.

Forestterrarium

This is a type of Terrarium that replicates a forest environment or a portion thereof. It's a midway point between a dry terrarium and a rainforest terrarium.

Desertterrarium

Desertterrarium is a type of Dryterrarium that includes a dry environment, with a deep layer of sand or clay - sand as the substrate. Vegetation in a desert terrarium is often restricted, and it's generally drought tolerant, such as cacti, succulents, succulents, or CAM plants.

Steppeterrarium

A Steppeterrarium is also a kind of Dryterrarium. A tepui terrarium is created from the same basic materials as a desert and savanna terrariums.

Savannaterrarium

The savannaterrarium is a style of Dryterrarium that recreates a grassland environment. The terrarium contains shrubs, rocks, and trees. It may include little thorny bush plants.

Rockterrarium

The fourth stage of Dryterrarium is this one, which is rocky, terraced, and sometimes less vegetated.

Formicarium

The terrarium shape replicates the ants' natural environment.

Insectarium

The Insectarium is a terrarium that imitates an insect's natural environment. Insectariums are frequently found in museums, and the subject of insects is referred to as "insectology." Not many people make indoor Insectarium tanks, however insect enthusiasts do.

Penguinarium

Simulations of the polar regions' chilly climate, with penguins, white bears, and fish as the main characters.... This type of terrarium is less popular for business or zoo display.

Vivarium

Vivarium comes from the Latin term for habitat, and it is also known as an ecological box or bigger, an eco room, a glass room, and a preserved enclosure where researchers or nature enthusiasts may observe or study. Vivarium and Terrairium are both terms that mean a microenclosure that is tiny in size and disconnected from the surrounding environment. Vivarium, on the other hand, frequently employs only a limited and closed ecological setting that includes soil, air, flora, and animals. On a broad scale, vivarium is often utilized in scientific study or realistic simulation, whereas terrarium is usually used on a tiny scale such as as decoration or art exhibits.

What You'll Need:

Steps To Create Your Own Terrarium:

Terrarium Workshop

Step 1: Start by cleaning your glass container with a mild soap and water solution. Rinse it well and allow it to air dry completely.

Step 2: Next, add a layer of gravel, small rocks, or pebbles to the bottom of the container to prevent waterlogging of the plants because glass containers are different from plant pots which have a drainage hole. You can make the gravel layer thick or thin based on the container's diameter.

Step 3: Put a thin layer of activated charcoal over the rocks. This will help purify water, reducing the spread of bacteria and fungi in the soil as well as rotten plants.

Step 4: Add a layer of moss over the charcoal. This will act as a filter to prevent dirt and bacteria from entering the terrarium.

Step 5: Put on top a layer of humus to keep the soil moist, providing more nutrients for the plants and allowing water to penetrate more quickly.

Step 6: Spread a layer of porous soil with high humus on top. You can adjust the thickness of the layer depending on the size of the container.

Step 7: Add a handful of small plants to the terrarium. We recommend using succulents or cacti because they are easy to care for and don't require much water. For closed containers, we should only plant some types of moss and ferns because sealed containers are usually watered once a month which is not favorable for certain types of plants.

Step 8: Water the plants with a spray bottle filled with water. Be sure to not overwater the plants, as this can cause them to rot.

Step 9: Place the terrarium in a bright, sunny location.

Step 10: Enjoy your new terrarium! Remember to mist the plants with water every week or so to keep them healthy and happy.

What are Terrariums?

Terrariums can be used to bring the splendour and peace of the outdoors into your own home. Some plants, on the other hand, may have a hard time growing in such cramped circumstances, making them difficult to cultivate. Terrariums need specific conditions that aren't always available elsewhere.

Benefits of Terrariums

1. Therapeutic

Terrariums provide a calming environment owing to their resemblance to nature. Terrace plants, as well as terrarium moss, contribute to this sense of calmness and serenity. Succulents and other terrarium mosses, for example, can help you feel more peaceful and less tense. Terrarium plants also help you sleep better by releasing oxygen at night.

2. Easy to Maintain

Succulents may be cultivated in a terrarium, which is an ecosystem that does not require watering or fertilizing. Succulent plants thrive in bright, hot environments and are therefore ideal for creating terrariums. Certain succulent plants, such as ferns and mosses, need to be watered once every few weeks.

3. Suitable for Allergies

Terrariums may be utilized as a breathing environment since they remove all of the allergens present in a house. Terrarium plants, such as ferns and mosses, are popular because they do not shed spores and attract pollinators. Mosses and ferns also possess humidity-controlling properties.

4. Adaptable to Most Places

Terrariums may be placed virtually anyplace in your house. They can be displayed on a windowsill, on a shelf for terrariums, or even on the floor. They can also provide aesthetic appeal when combined with flowers or other decorations.

5. Easy to Make

Terrarium building is quite basic, and even if you've never constructed a terrarium before, our team of specialists at FunEmpire will assist you in creating your own terrariums during our Terrarium Workshop Singapore.

6. Circulates Clean Air

Plants are used in indoor terrariums to purify the air and raise its relative humidity through phytoextraction and transpiration. Houseplants are prized for removing pollutants such as benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde while also lowering overall carbon dioxide levels.

Tips to Maintain Your Terrariums

1. Humidity

It's best to water your terrariums only once a week or less. The most reliable indicator of whether your plants are getting enough water is humidity. It's the consequence of having a large quantity of water in the system, to put it another way.

2. Remove dead plants as soon as possible

It's tough to produce a realistic terrarium that looks like the real thing. They don't contain the necessary species to efficiently decompose organic waste. Any unchecked dead plant matter will decay over time. We recommend removing any ill or dying plants as soon as possible. It will assist to keep the balance and minimize the likelihood of rot spreading throughout your plants.

3. Keep away from direct sunlight

When your plants are in direct sunlight, they're very susceptible to burning. Keep an eye on the position of your terrariums and the type of light your vegetation require. Low-light plants are also more flexible regarding where you may put them in your home, so you might consider them if you want something a little different.

4. Keep an eye out for mould

Mould is the quiet opponent that lurks in the nooks and crannies of every terrarium. Mildew and dust are typical issues, yet terrariums are unrivaled among your home's plants. They're enclosed, have a high humidity level, and cause mould to develop. There are several terrarium care products on the market that claim to be safe for terrariums while also preventing mould problems.

5. Clean your jar

Terrarium glass containers, on the other hand, not only look terrible (and half of the pleasure of terrariums is being able to look at them), but they also prevent the plants from receiving adequate light. Remove any fibers from the glass using a lint-free cloth and warm clean water.

6.Water carefully

When your terrarium does require water, a mild shower is generally preferable to a downpour. Some plants may surprise you with their sensitivity to being overwatered. Over-watering them can cause them to suffer from stress and drop their leaves as a result of over-watering them. If possible, water your terrarium carefully to prevent waterlogging soil in some areas but not others.

7. Allow them to grow

In reality, we all want healthy and happy plants in our terrarium. We should do everything possible to provide the best circumstances for them to thrive, yet terraria are different since we don't want our plants to grow excessively.
